A Perfect Day for Golfing

August 13, 2022

Golfers stepped up in a big way for the tenth anniversary of the National Bank Cardiac Classic.

The sold-out 2022 golf tournament held Monday, August 8, at Niakwa Country Club brought in $110,000 for cardiac care and research at St. Boniface Hospital, exceeding the goal set by organizers. From its inception, the event has now raised more than $700,000 for cardiac care and related biomedical research at the Hospital.

Invited to donate to Manitoba’s Cardiac Centre of Excellence in person at the clubhouse, golfers and teams pushed the day-of fundraising total up past $20,000 for the first time in the tournament’s history, smashing expectations.

“This was the tenth anniversary of our annual flagship fundraiser, and we could not have asked for a better day in terms of sponsorship support, donations from golfers and teams, and of course, the weather,” said Karen Fowler, President and CEO of St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.

Hampered by rain last year, the tournament at Niakwa this time took place under a clear blue sky. While the wind picked up over the course of the day, the temperature reached an afternoon high of 28 C.

“Players told us throughout the day not only how much they enjoyed golfing as part of the event, but also how much they appreciated the opportunity to learn more about and support cardiac care and research at St. Boniface. It was a win-win,” said Fowler.

Bob Lafrenière, Tournament Chair, added, “I continue to be amazed at the commitment and generosity of organizations and individuals towards support of cardiac care at the Hospital. It’s obviously a cause that touches many people deeply – likely because most of us have been impacted by cardiac challenges, either directly, or through someone close to us.”

More than 51,000 patients receive care through the Cardiac Sciences Manitoba program at the Hospital annually. This includes over 1,100 cardiac surgeries in a typical year.
