It’s a beautiful thing when members of our community band together to help others.

That is exactly what happened last weekend, when St. Boniface Hospital’s Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) Lab received a windfall donation of $42,400 from several generous donors. Dr. Clarence Khoo and Dr. Colette Seifer, who work in the Cardiac EP Lab, were there to meet the community members who made this donation possible, and to say thanks.

Canadian Pacific (CP) generously donated $20,000 to help purchase Ultrasound probes that will be used for treating St. Boniface Hospital patients with heart arrhythmia – irregular heart rhythms. The Cardiac EP Lab treats more than 400 patients each year for arrhythmia, and this new equipment will support machinery already in use by making them adaptable and able to perform a variety of procedures. Barb and Gerry Price contributed an additional $20,000 to support the purchase of these Ultrasound probes.

And in June, Purohit Nurse Practitioner Clinic and Trendy Treats teamed up to host The Heart of the Community, a pop-up ice cream event in support of cardiac care at St. Boniface Hospital. By selling yummy frozen treats and raffle tickets, the Purohit family raised $2,400 to support the purchase of Kardia mobile devices for arrhythmia patients – patients can take these devices home for several weeks at a time to monitor their arrhythmia, which then sync to their smart phones and update cardiologists with a recording of heart rhythms over time. These devices are in high demand – having more devices on hand will decrease wait-times and ensure more patients have access to them.

This new equipment, made possible by our donor community, will reduce procedure times, decrease pain, and lessen complications for cardiac patients.

We are grateful to CP, Barb and Gerry Price, the Purohit family, and Trendy Treats for supporting the Cardiac EP Lab, and thankful to community members who came out to support The Heart of the Community event in June. Your contributions to cardiac care are deeply meaningful for the hundreds of patients who will benefit from this new equipment!
