Golfers usually aim for the lowest scores, but they raised the highest amount ever recorded for St. Boniface Hospital’s cardiac care and research programs at the 2026 National Bank Cardiac Classic.
“Wow, what a final total,” remarked St. Boniface Hospital Foundation President and CEO Karen Fowler to more than 120 golfers assembled on the Gupta Terrace at Niakwa Country Club, Monday, August 10.
“Thanks to your generosity, we raised $157,000 today. That is a record-breaking amount at this tournament, bringing our 14-year total to more than $1.2 million in support of cardiac care and research at St. B,” said Fowler. She added that initiatives that will benefit from the funds include improving access to care at Manitoba’s Cardiac Centre of Excellence and Manitoba’s first coronary reactivity testing program.
The prestigious golf tournament was blessed with picture-perfect weather: clear and sunny with a light breeze and an afternoon high of 25 C.
Pro golfer greeted teams
In his opening remarks, Eric Lafrenière of title sponsor National Bank said the Cardiac Classic adds meaningful purpose to a round of golf. “Helping advance innovative research and compassionate cardiac care, including important support of women’s heart care, and benefiting tens of thousands of people who rely upon St. Boniface Hospital each year,” he said. “It’s only by caring for every member in our communities that we can collectively thrive.”
A new surprise guest awaited players at Hole 10, sponsored by Telpay. Manitoba professional golfer and four-time amateur champion Braxton Kuntz had an offer many could not pass up: for a donation of $25 or more at the tee box, Kuntz would drive their ball for them. Needless to say, Kuntz expertly dropped many a perfect shot onto the green for his awestruck audience.
Other special guests who met and chatted with golfers at different holes included Dr. Michael Czubryt, Executive Director of Research at St. B and Emily Phillips, Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Cardiac Sciences program whose PhD research focused on improving recovery after open-heart surgery through patient-centred approaches. Several corporate sponsors also had tents on the course to offer free samples and share their business expertise.
Another new feature at the tournament this year gave golfers the chance to bid on an exclusive auction package for two to see pop-music star Harry Styles perform at Madison Square Garden in New York City this year. The package included round-trip airfare, with the winning bid to support cardiac care and research at the Hospital.
