Gérald Fay held his grandchild for the first time

Micheline Fay shares her family’s story:

My brother and his wife were expecting their second child. As Dad fought on in the Cardiac Unit, and with the baby’s due date approaching, my brother said, “He needs to meet the baby before he leaves us.”

Late at night on October 4th, my brother came into Dad’s hospital room and gently woke us. “It’s a boy! It’s a boy,” he said. They named the baby Gavin. He was with his mother, just two floors below us.

The next afternoon, a nurse kindly escorted my sister-in-law, Jeannette, with the baby up to Dad’s room. This was a special arrangement, for which we were so thankful to the compassionate doctors and nurses.

As he cradled his grandson in his weakened arms, a contented smile crossed his face. He kissed the baby once, and then again.

For that moment there was only the two of them in the world. Dad wanted to let the baby know he would be watching over him his whole life.

Dad held on just long enough to close the circle. He needed to feel the warmth of his newest grandson on his chest before it was time for him to go.

Gérald Fay, beloved father and grandfather, passed away that night. He was only 62 years old. But his spirit is still with us in Gavin.
